Air to Air Heating Systems – Providing Homes With Warmth and Heated Water.
Air to air heating systems device which transfers heat energy from the outside environment into the inside of a house and vice versa depending on the time of the season. These systems use vapour compression refrigeration system that involves a compressor that allows or hinders heat transfer into the building, a heat exchange coil and a condenser that transfers heat into the house. There are three types of air to air heat pumps.
· All-electric heat pump: They are equipped with an own heating system which is electric heaters.
· Add-on heat pumps: They have added source of heat e.g. Oil, or gas furnace.
· Bivalent: Use burner to heat the air entering the coil placed outside. Uses propane as fuel.
Parts of the air to air heating systems
In-door and out-door heat exchange coils which are used to extract heat from the outside air and transfer the heat into hot tubes respectively, a heating system, a reversing valve, compressor, and pipes.
They operate in three cycles.
· The heating cycle:
Heat is absorbed from the ambient air and is pumped indoors. A refrigerant in the system absorbs heat and is compressed making it warmer than the indoor temperature. Since the coolant temperature is high the heat in it is transferred indoors using the condenser.
· The cooling cycle:
The heating cycle is reversed to cool the air inside the room. Liquid refrigerant is passed through an expansion device which reduces its pressure and absorbs heat from indoors.
The liquid changes to vapour passing through a reversing valve into the outdoor coil which in turn releases the heat outdoors.
· The defrost cycle:
Takes place when the temperature outside is near or below freezing point. Moisture in the air passing through the heat pump condenses and freeze on the pump. At this point, the pump switches to defrost mode by having the reverse valve switch the pump to cooling mode. This enables hot gas to be sent to the outdoor coil melting down the frost.
Maintenance of Air to Air Heating Systems.
Just like any other systems, air to air pumps need a proper support for them to operate efficiently and stay for long. Some of their maintenance can be done easily by the owner and an annual inspection done by a qualified service technician.
Service is best done by the end of the cooling season as the hot season is about to begin. Some of the frequent services include:
· Cleaning or replacing filters as required each month or as instructed by the manufacturer
· Lubricating the fan motor and cleaning the fan
· Making sure the vents are not blocked to allow free air flow thus efficient working of the pump.
